Former Church of Chiquimula

Fachada de la Antigua Catedral de Chiquimula.

Facade of the Old Cathedral Chiquimula.

There are no accurate data on the date of its foundation, but is located in the eighteenth century.

Its architecture reminds the churches of La Antigua Guatemala.

It is next to the Church of San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán of the most beautiful colonial buildings of eastern Guatemala despite being in ruins, while the opposite Acasaguastlán is in perfect condition.

Hardships begin

Built and named as the Most Holy Trinity Church a tough future awaited him: in October of 1743 the earth tremble and earthquakes would cause the first d
amage to its structure. This was only the beginning of its decline.

On June 2, 1765 that anticipated strong winds came a violent storm. This would be the worst ... between the winds before the storm, the church would be hit by a severe earthquake that serious damage.

The whole town and surrounding buildings were severely damaged resulting in deaths and injuries.

Church ruins

The severity of the damage to its structure forced its abandonment.

The entire roof dome collapsed, leaving only standing walls and columns. The front foot remains in severe signs of deterioration and traces of armed conflict to live the country, as abundant evidence facade shots.

Between the pillars and arches

Interior de las ruinas de la antigua Catedral de Chiquimula.

Interior ruins the old Cathedral Chiquimula.

At present it is closed to the public for security reasons, but its facade as well as its walls, are worthy of admiration.

From the front and sides you can see inside where four trees have grown they reach the height where the dome was located. The arches give us an idea of the original dimensions.

Directions

The ruins of the Church of the Holy Trinity are just a few minutes away from Chiquimula. Ask for the old train station, which is a few meters from the ruins.

If traveling from Guatemala City, keep in mind that there are two main entrances to enter Chiquimula. It is the second (which is due to Esquipulas) that you must take. There is no tourist signs but it is not difficult to find the ruins.

From Guatemala: drive on the highway to the Atlantic (CA9) east of Guatemala, passing through El Progreso, Pasabién and crossing at the entrance of Zacapa. Approximately 24 minutes to reach the first entrance to Chiquimula (quite commercial), still on Highway CA9 until the second income. Bon voyage!
