Santo Domingo Church

Iglesia y amplio átreo de Santo Domingo, zona 1. It is located at 12 Avenida 10-09 Zone 1 and for some the Church of Santo Domingo is famous for its beautiful neoclassical architecture.

For others it is famous because here is dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario, crowned as queen of Guatemala on January 28, 1933.

It is during the month of October that rosary around holidays are filled with stores selling casual and typical foods of the date, including the famous French toast and wine grapes.

(The slices are desserts of bread and honey, the wine grapes are fried with special blend of minced meat with onion and tomato).

The Atreus, unlike most of the churches Atreus Historical Center (open or surrounded by bars) is closed except for their income to the interior.

This makes it a peaceful and secluded area of traffic and bustle of the zone 1 of the Capital City.

On weekends throughout the year, is common to find in his side on the street, sales of toast and gruel.

History

The land was given by the Dominican government in 1776, who immediately became the first religious based on the new City of Guatemala who recently was located in the Valle de la Ermita.

It took sixteen years of its completion, from 1792 to 1808.

The building was damaged by the earthquakes of 1917 and 1942 but was repaired in full. His broad and solid walls remain standing date with a flawless beauty.

In his Atreus is a monument to Fray Bartolome de las Casas with a commemorative plaque on 12 October 1892.

Member of the Religious Order of Santo Domingo, Fray Bartolome de las Casas, of Spanish origin, was crowned champion of the Indians during the Spanish conquest. His first contact with the Indians made him witness the abuses of slavery.

He promoted the peaceful settlement and their struggle was decisive in promoting the "new laws" to prohibit the enactment of the Indian slavery.
