Population decline during the conquest

The conquest of America was not easy. The territory is now Guatemala and the Mayan peoples who inhabited it were fierce battle. The chronicles of the time have the many deaths of the Mayan population to face off against a more sophisticated army, not to mention the clashes between the indigenous groups themselves by ancient animosities.
Assignment, history of slavery and abuse
The Indians immediately become labor for the settlers. The parcel was itself the distribution of Indians to work for the benefit of their managers. Numerous parcels abuse emerged, including in some cases make the Indians with hot irons.
Poor working and living conditions, constant efforts and others were causing casualties indigenous peoples.
Diseases in the New World
Additional deaths due to war and abuse, diseases brought by Europeans posed a threat to the lives of indigenous people whose immune system was not ready. Cases such as smallpox meant many deaths.
First Defenders
Characters began to appear soon church members who intervened to protect the Indians. This is a confusing chapter for the religious institution, dedicated members who had to fight for human life and respect for the indigenous population, others were perhaps moved by their conscience (not the pain of others) and sought treatment for people who do not lose sleep at night, and of course the same in the end, members of the church who were dedicated to destroying the indigenous historical documents, discontinue its traditional in the education system (which causes loss of information ancestral) and embark on Christening a marathon task.
