Urlanta Waterfall

Foto cortesía de fotosdeguatemala.com Urlanta has gradually become a place visited by local tourists. Its proximity to the city of Jalapa make travel planning is not a problem.

Urlanta initially met as a destination for rock climbing. In addition to the expectation of the routes, I received many comments on the site, being described as a natural paradise with a breathtaking waterfall.

Already a bit hard to impress, having visited the waterfall of El Salto Chilascó, I just think Urlanta as a place to climb.

To get there you must visit the city of Jalapa, located approximately 100 kilometers from the capital. You should take the Atlantic Highway and enter the junction signposted before Sanarate.

Once in the city of Jalapa, following the driveway will reach the market a block away, in storage of grains and sugar, where you must turn right and go straight to the top of the road. Then turn left and at the next intersection, go right until you reach the dirt road.

3 bridges will be small and after a few minutes, reach the entrance to the respective sign "Urlanta Falls."

It is necessary to pay a small fee to join and managers will guide visitors to the waterfall.

Like all good travelers, with early indications, we decided to enter it on our own and results about 2 kilometers away from the intersection to the waterfall. But it was worth it reached the river at its quiet and enjoy a good hiking trail around. The abundance of birds and insects made the walk interesting.

Not knowing the height of the waterfall, we had meant to follow the river to reach ... big mistake ...Foto: Héctor Roldán. When we returned to the road, find the intersection to the waterfall and we got to the climbing routes.

From the waterfall mound was visible from afar and is stunning. Its height reaches about 65 feet fall. It was hot and decided to go down to cool off considering a dip in the river ... another big mistake ...

Despite the heat, the influent water broke its banks and drops scattered everywhere by raising the humidity level in the bottom. When we reached the base we found that water temperature was extremely cold. Only a hand dip was enough to forget the idea of swimming. The noise from the waterfall was quite strong.

Decided to come back and the road was quite difficult. The humidity did his job again but this time on the floor, which was extremely slippery.

It is a destination worth visiting and is not dangerous. However, this story shows that it is not easy walking in the area because we had decided to enter a part of difficult access. Beyond that, the place is suitable for family visits.

Climbing ...

We hiked for hours in the rock the place stays pretty clean. The sport routes ranging from a fairly easy 5.8 with a final grade of about 5.10, to a degree more difficult to estimate of 5.11 +.

We were pretty tired but it was more walking than for climbing. We had lunch at the place and we saw something odd: a swarm of bees up from the valley floor.

The hum of the bees is a bit intimidating considering the amount, however if they are not bothered or do not make noise, it can hang in place without problems.

The place has potential for more climbing routes, and traditional sports. But some of the rocks need a serious cleanup work because they are covered with vegetation.
