Chicabal Lagoon in Quetzaltenango

Foto por JorgExtremo Of all the volcanoes of Guatemala are famous for having two lakes in its crater. One is the Ipala Volcano (which some say is in Jutiapa and others in Chiquimula, but see the elevation map reveals that shares territory in both departments.)

And of course, the other famous for its beauty and importance to the Mayan culture is to Chicabal found in the department of Quetzaltenango.

This volcano is not difficult

Chicabal Volcano at an altitude of 2.700 meters above sea level. The altitude should not worry those who begin to climb volcanoes in Guatemala because Xela as a city is 2.330 meters over sea level. Furthermore, the ascent is quite simple and well-identified paths.

It is so easy to get (so to speak) from the road because the signs are somewhat confusing (if any). Perhaps because there are important rituals held for the Maya worldview and a way to promote Chicabal avoid a place for sightseeing. So much so that during the first days of May left no entry. Holy Week is good time to go yet.

The Center of the Maya World View

The few signs that lead to the entrance where you pay an entrance fee which varies for domestic and foreign tourists (from Q10 to Q20) indicate that Chicabal is the center of the Maya worldview. Right there are no toilets and sale of drinks for the road.

From the entrance where there is ample parking begins to walk until it reaches a fork left up to the viewpoint of the lagoon and down to the shore. The road is wide and there is no way of getting lost.

Just the way down to the lake becomes narrow part of the stretch but totally passable.

Sacred Place

If you have the feeling that they are seeing is because of insurance and is and is not to worry. In Chicabal the community keeps the place clean and ensures that visitors behave. So conduct yourselves because it is a place of great respect. In the shore will find altars and if you're lucky you'll see the odd ritual. Remember to be respectful and discreet, not a place to take their photo as if they were folk dances from a public celebration ... These are rituals of respect.

The people are very friendly here, but remember it's not a playground but a place so sacred goal not wash anything or let alone swim in the lagoon because it would be a great offense.

Arrive in the morning

The landscape is very nice but try to arrive early because the fog takes over the place, it's still a nice setting but steals the opportunity of the best photos.

The first week of May is the most important and many priests come across Guatemala to practice their rituals.

The width of the Laguna de Chicabal is about 550 meters and its depth is estimated at no less than 300 meters.

And how to get to Chicabal?

First go to San Martín Chile Verde is not far from Xela and will be there 30 minutes by bus or car. From here it is important to see where to go to Chicabal as the narrow streets with shops often make it very easy to lose orientation. Surely in this bus is easier.

If you continue by car or on foot will continue to decline entering the valley still find shops, dining rooms and gas stations. See the beginning of the rise there is not so obvious as to describe it in lines here and we do not want to miss, but do not worry us because being there was enough to find a simple question.

This way up leads to the entry of Chicabal and do not worry because small buses are also rising type van. It's a bit steep, so avoid going in a car overloaded because it will surely go down in parts.

Yes leave Chicabal camping in the area of the entry if you bring your own equipment (tent and sleeping bag). Remember that the weather in these areas is welcome but more cold than in the capital. Bon voyage!
