Abaj Takalik

Abaj Takalik is located in El Asintal, Retalhuleu. It's at just minutes from the center of Rehu via a paved road in great conditions.

Abaj Takalik is one of the most important maya sites because of its history. In fact Takalik is also one of the most ancient maya archaeological sites known to date and it shows signs of the evolution and transition of the olmeca culture to the maya.

There are several structures at the place being mostly for ceremonial purposes. It also shows many zoo morph figures of frogs, crocodiles and turtles. The structures were built around 400 years B.C. and some are dated 1,000 B.C.

The guides at Takalik know very well their job and are well trained in history.

They explain to the visitors the origins of the site, theories of the maya culture and the purpose of each edification.

What to expect at Abaj Takalik?

  • It is a safe place near the center of Rehu. Don't worry, is not a long drive.
  • There are some hotels nearby in the middle of the nature around. This are more ecologic than luxury. Find even more options at the main city of Rehu.

How to get to Abaj Takalik?

Follow this directions: From Guatemala City drive south via CA9 and then take the CA2. The road has signs at every turn you could find but keep your eyes open. Very often people end up on the road to the beach.

You will reach the entrance to the main city of Rehu, stay on the main road (CA2) and keep going. After 15 minutes approximately you will reach a turn to your right taking you to El Asintal. Take this turn and you are there.
