Retalhuleu

In Guatemala Retalhuleu is called just -Rehu-.  It is a southern department enjoying the benefits of the low altitude and fertile lands.

Its economy is based primary in agriculture and tourism.

Rehu is called -The center of the world- and recently is becoming famous for its recreational park IRTRA (more on this below).

You'll notice the moisture in the air as you get closer to Rehu while de temperature also starts increasing. Depending on the season you could find heavy traffic as the trucks transport all the products to the main markets.

The rainy season hits quite hard this land but is just part of the fun. Just avoid driving at night on heavy rain.

Beautiful historic center

The main plaza and the church itself are good examples of art and architecture. The city is in constant economic growth and this makes easier to find new and modern places every year.

Rehu is the home of Abaj Takalik, a very important archaeological site at just minutes from the center of the city. Is one of the ancient maya sites known. This place reveals signs of the transition of the olmeca culture into the maya civilization.

There are several rivers all around. The water supply is not a problem around here. That's why Rehu is the come of the biggest recreational park called IRTRA.

The private companies of Guatemala created an organization in charge of the recreation of their workers. This leaded to one park, then another and it kept growing. The companies pay a monthly fee for each employee and their workers gain access to great bargains of fun.

Tourists are allowed paying for their entrance. It has become a very visited destination by people from all around (even foreign countries). Among the main attractions are replicas of famous places of the world, also recreational games, theater, music, great restaurants with local and international meals and a water attraction park.

How to get to Rehu

From Guatemala City take the CA9 to the south of Guatemala. You will see the signs heading to Retalhuleu following the CA2. Keep your eyes open as very often people going to Rehu end up going to the south beaches of Guatemala!

The whole drive is about 3 hours from Guatemala City.
