Cathedral of San José in La Antigua Guatemala

The original church was built under the direction of Jose de Porres, renowned architect of the time.
However, the building was reduced to ruins by the earthquake of 1583 and 1600 that damaged the structure which was later demolished to make way for a subsequent construction.
The construction of the new cathedral began in 1669 and was inaugurated in 1680. This is the present Cathedral of Antigua Guatemala that we see across from Central Park. It was considered one of the most beautiful buildings of the time. It still has its range of Catedral Metropolitana, which he obtained in 1743.
The Cathedral occupies almost the entire block and adorns itself around the front facing Central Park.
Speaking to the corner where the Palace of the Captains can see a side entrance which gives entry to the ruins of the previous building that occupies the remainder of the block.
The contrast of the story
Inside the Cathedral you can see the beauty of the altar and the sensitivity of the dome. When visiting the ruins you will see the huge blocks of old buildings, some standing and others completely demolished along with remnants of the original dome: a picture worth seeing after watching closely the current building intact.
