Top reasons to visit Guatemala

Is easy to think the top destinations are the obvious reasons for visiting Guatemala, talking with travelers from all over the world uncovers the variety of experiences each person treasures. From magnificent Mayan temples, the culture, landscapes, the food, the mixture of cultures. And sometimes it's the little details, like traveling on a chicken bus, or relaxing drinking coffee admiring the blue lakes with a sky painting different colors every day.

Traveling around Guatemala is very cheap, we have fruits and vegetables all year and the food is amazing. Many destinations are at your hand in short time and you can make wonders with your day. While is impossible to put everything on a single list here are some of the things I've been told (by travelers) coming as gifts of life.

1. The weather

Such weather provides a variety of blessings, blue sky, and when cloudy the clouds tell stories. It's never too cold and it's never too hot.

2. Archaeological treasures

There is a rich history and cultural heritage surviving to the present days. Let your mind wander on the land of kings and queens of the Mayan kingdom, enjoy the view from the top, a delight reserved for the elite. Tikal, Yaxhá and Iximché are a few of the most visited archaeological destinations due to it's beauty and easy of access, but there is more, plenty more.

3. The culture

There is a wide variety of lifestyles and natural wisdom ruling their lives. Visit key destinations that are preserved as sacred sites. Watch a Maya ceremony, get in contact with the elements and ancient wise grandparents.

4. Volcanoes (we have 3 active ones)

We have 3 active volcanoes: Santiaguito, Fuego and Pacaya. Santiaguito is the wildest one, Fuego can be spotted from Acatenango and admired from all around Antigua Guatemala. Pacaya is nearby and is very noble, allowing you to witness the volcanic activity from close distance, even to prepare marshmallows on it's hot lava. Or if you want an immersive experience: climb one of the many volcanoes.

5. Antigua Guatemala, the colonial city

La Antigua Guatemala is the most famous, packed with numerous temples, walk around and discover churches and monuments near Guatemala City. Here you can travel to the past and enjoy wonderful cultural sites all around.

6. Amazing towns with breathtaking views

The western highlands have been for years the delight of many visitors to the country. Admire Almolonga, all the towns around Xela, visit Quiché, the wonderful destinations around Totonicapán and more. Besides you can also go to the north and enjoy the Las Verapaces, another region ruled by sweet blue skies and wonderful greens.

7. Beautiful nature

Guatemala doesn't have only one weather, there is a variety of specific micro climates allowing diverse wildlife and natural sanctuaries. There are so many, enough to satisfy every single personal taste, is difficult to represent such beauty and many places with just one picture. So, come and walk on low depth crystal water paradises, or dive in on also clear water fun. Take a nice walk among the trees, enjoy amazing forests, or just go low profile to admire a diverse universe of birds, local and migratory species.

8. The food, the taste

A huge gastronomic culture preserves ancient foods, and of course we also have the mixture of flavors with exotic influences. 9. Learn Spanish

Guatemala has been called by many around the world as the best place to learn, due to numerous factors such as the neutral accent and wonderful cultural places around. La Antigua Guatemala (a rich in culture and architecture city) has been for years a preferred destination for such reason, just like Quetzaltenango with it's Italian influences. Several learning programs offer help to arrange your stay with a local traditional family. Or just join a group of students and enjoy the benefits of learning along with people from all over the world.

10. The whole experience

A wide variety of things that are scarce and expensive on other countries here are a daily blessing at the reach of your hand: every day. Nature surrounds all the cities and the wildlife is a paradise. Many hold to their traditional beliefs as a true way of life, combine all of that and you will see how it affects the way we live and the way we treat everyone around us. You can actually feel it, and the more you stay the more you perceive the little details that makes us remember that life is a precious gift.
